This invention relates to cell growth modulating materials which are present in blood and other biological fluids. These growth promoting or inhibiting materials comprise glycoproteins and can be removed from the biological fluids by the use of lectins. This invention also relates to cell growth enhancers produced from the lysis of red blood cells, as well as methods of extracting growth promoting substances from body fluids and compositions and methods of use for same.
