PURPOSE:To recover monoalkeylbenzene of a high purity in a high yield by deactivating and/or removing the alkali metal carrying catalyst included in the liquid reaction mixture before distillation of the remaining. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic hydrocarbon having one or more hydrogen atoms in the alpha-position of the side chain is alkenylated with a conjugated diene of 4 or 5 carbon atoms at its side chain. Then, the catalyst in the resultant reaction mixture is deactivated and/or removed and the remaining is distilled to collect the isolated monoalkenylbenzene. The deactivation and/or the removal of the catalyst are effected by i) filtration with a filter of less than 5mu, ii) contact with water, iii) contact with an aqueous acid solution such as hydrochloric, sulfuric, formic or acetic acid, iv) contact with an alcohol such as isopropanol followed by contact with water or an aqueous acid solution, v) contact with an alcohol followed by contact with a solid acid, a carbon material, or a cation- exchange resin, particularly ii) to v) contact treatment followed by i) filtration is preferred. |
