<p>The method consists in irradiating the object using a collimated X-ray beam (21) corresponding to an energy spectrum having a photoionization threshold and detecting the transmitted beam after it has passed through said object (24). The method is also characterized in that a continuous function, representing the X-ray attenuation or transmission as a function of the energy, is determined, and the existence of an inflection point characteristic of said material is checked for on the curve representing said continuous attenuation or transmission function, in the vicinity of the energy level corresponding to the photoionization threshold.
