PURPOSE: To allow a large shearing deformation of an elastomer material by fixing an elastomer assembly to a shaft and a housing through a surface of one band of the elastomer assembly where the elastomer member is not jointed. CONSTITUTION: An elastomer assembly 37 is formed of a circular core 44 of elastomeric material such as rubber jointed with a pair of roughly coaxial stainless steel bands 40 and 42 parted axially and radially. The band 40 has holes 46 parted for about 90 deg. in the circumferential direction, and the core 44 has lugs 48 parted in the circumferential direction and formed in such a form, a size, and an interval to be enaged with a drive groove 36 of a cover 32 of a seal ring 24. The band 40 is connected to a shaft sleeve 50 by a drive pin 52 having a part received in one of the holes 46 of the band 40. As deflection is applied to the ring 24, the band 42 starts sliding left on the outer side of the band 40, and the core 44 is set in a sheared condition along the whole cross sectional surface between the two bands 40, 42.
