A conventional 3-jaw chuck body with sliding jaws is seated in a square base casting (2) which can be secured to the machine tool. To drive the jaws in their radial guideways the jaw carriers are linked by inclined dovetails (6,20) to a cylinder (17) which can move to and fro in the bore formed by facing recesses (9) and (10) in the base casting and chuck body. In the bore of cylinder (17) is a fixed piston and rod (12,13) When pressurized oil is admitted to either side of the piston (1), the cylinder (17) is moved to clamp or release the chuck jaws. USE/ADVANTAGE - Chuck is of compact design with short axial length. Virtually no tipping moment is exerted on chuck.
