A dredge (10) which comprises a V-or U-shaped pontoon (18) having a first leg (20) and a second leg (22). The legs have effective longitudinal axes that diverge from one another by an angle of no more than 180 DEG : spuds (24 and 26) or similar anchoring means are connected to each of the respective pontoon legs by slides (25 and 27) that allow the pontoon (18) to be advanced relative to a substrate to which the spuds (24 and 26) are anchored. A bucket wheel (16) is suspended from the pontoon (18) by a dredge ladder (14). Slewing means (36) are provided to cause the dredge ladder (14), and the bucket wheel (16) attached to it, to be slewed from side to side relative to the legs (20 and 22) of the pontoon (10), about a substantially vertical axis.
