The invention discloses a binding machine which permits a prolonged service life of the drive-power supply means, e.g. an electric motor, for feeding/tensioning a band and which makes it possible to carry out maintenance work, e.g. replacement and adjustment of the components, in a simple manner, and of which the overall construction may be simple and cost-effective and which nevertheless permits savings in energy. The binding machine comprises a band feeding/tension means (F) which is designed for the feeding, primary tensioning and secondary tensioning of a band (B) wound around the periphery of an article which is to be bound and subjected to similar operations; the band feeding-tensioning unit (F) being constructed such that it carries out the feeding, primary tensioning and secondary tensioning of the band (B) by driving a roller (8) by way of a drive means (M2) which can be controlled for rotation, rearwards rotation and into the stop position. <IMAGE>
