The invention relates to a rotary internal combustion engine with two essentially identical, circular discs (1, 4) arranged perpendicular to one another, which have a piston area (2, 5) of relatively large diameter and an intermediate area (3, 6) of smaller diameter and rotate at the same angular velocity about axes of rotation (7, 8) perpendicular to one another, one of which forms the output. At the same time they are in meshing engagement with one another on the working faces (9, 10, 11, 12) formed by the interfaces of piston areas (2, 5) to intermediate areas (3, 6) and each disc (1 or 4) is tightly enclosed by a housing (13 or 14). Such an internal combustion engine needs a complicated transmission and a lot of space. The object of developing such an engine so that it needs little space is achieved in that the axes of rotation (7, 8) of the discs (1, 4) intersect at a point and each working face (9, 10) incorporates a recess for the accommodation of the corresponding working face (11, 12) during the meshing engagement, and the housings (13, 14) in the area of the meshing engagement form a duct (15), which connects the outsides (16, 17) of the two discs (1, 4) to one another, and the housings (13, 14) have inlet and exhaust openings (20, 21). <IMAGE>
