PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound in high yield, by oxidizing and alkyl- substituted phenolic compound in a solvent system compound of an alcohol and a compound having amide bond in the presence of a catalyst comprising a salt of a metal selected from Mn, Fe, Cu, Se, V, Mo and Pd. CONSTITUTION:The objective 3,5-dialkyl-4hydroxy-aromatic carbonyl compound of formula II (e.g. 3,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde) can be produced by oxidizing a 2,4,6-trialkylphenol compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are alkyl; R3 is H or alkyl) in a solvent consisting of a mixture of an alcohol (e.g. methanol, ethanol, etc.) and a compound having amide bond (e.g. N,N- dimethylformamide, tetramethylurea, etc.) in the presence of a catalyst comprising a salt (preferably halide, nitrate, acetate, sulfate or acetylacetonate) of at least one kind of metal selected from Mn, Fe, Cu, Se, V, Mo and Pd. |
