A magnetic recording medium comprising: a base film comprising a polyester layer A having a thickness of 0.05 to 0.40 mu m and a surface roughness Ra<A> of 5 to 25 nm, the layer A containing 0.4 to 10.0 wt% of particles of at least one selected from the group consisting of gamma -alumina, delta -alumina and theta -alumina, having an average particle size of 0.01 to 0.09 mu m and smaller than an thickness of the layer A, and a polyester layer B laminated on the layer A by coextrusion; and a magnetic layer disposed so as to place the polyester layer B between the polyester layer A and the magnetic layer.
