In the case of rail vehicles and road vehicles the coefficient of friction between the wheel and carriageway is changed when required in that nozzles in the vicinity of the wheels blow water or compressed air onto the running surfaces or water, snow and ice are evaporated with laser light or microwaves and flushed away with air. The frequency spectrum of the laser light or of the microwaves is selected such that its energy is received from the water but not from the carriageway or the wheels.
