The proximity switch has a presence indicator (2) influenced from outside and controlling an electronic switch (4) via a digital amplifier (3). An auxiliary circuit (5) generates an auxiliary voltage for the presence indicator and the digital amplifier and contains a current supply circuit (6) and a zener-diode voltage limiter (7). The current supply circuit is a constant current source or acts with the voltage limiter as a constant current source. An electronic auxiliary switch is in parallel with the current supply circuit and is controlled by the presence indicator via the digital amplifier. The advantage lies in being able to apply a wide range of supply voltages without large voltage drops and large quiescent currents.
