The present invention provides an automatic transmission with a closing clutch which is closed to ensure that no jerk is produced while the vehicle is travelling in a predetermined gear. The automatic transmission has: a fluid coupling, a closing clutch which is arranged in the fluid coupling, a selector device for selecting at least one range, a vehicle speed sensor for detecting a vehicle speed and a throttle-valve angle sensor for detecting a throttle valve angle, a control unit for selecting a gear in accordance with the selected range, the vehicle speed and the throttle valve angle, for determining a gear-change function, for producing a gear-change function output signal, for setting the engaged or disengaged condition of the closing clutch in accordance with the selected range, the vehicle speed and the throttle valve angle and for producing a closing-function ON/OFF output signal, and an oil pressure switch for actuating a solenoid valve in response to the gear-change function output signal and the closing-function ON/OFF output signal from the control unit, for engaging/disengaging frictional engagement elements in accordance with the gear in order to select each gear, and for carrying out/cancelling the closing function of the closing clutch.
