The invention relates to a novel tyrosine kinase designated b^_r^_k^_ and the use of this tyrosine kinase in the development of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to cancer. The novel tyrosine kinase was isolated from a human metastatic breast tumour using a PCR based differential screening approach and has the deduced amino acid sequence shown in SEQ ID NO. 2.
