The invention relates to an electronic control system for metering fuel in an internal combustion engine. A signal (ti) for the quantity of fuel to be injected is produced in that a basic injection signal (te) and a signal (tUK') which is corrected by means of an adaptive correction factor (FKorr), for transition compensation, are logically connected. The adaptive correction factor (FKorr) is progressively adapted with the aid of a fuzzy logic (212) which evaluates the quality of the transition compensation with reference to selected characteristic variables. For example the central change (dL/dt) over time of the load (L) and the average value ( lambda M) of the air ratio ( lambda ) during a non steady state of operation of the internal combustion engine (100) serve as characteristic variables. <IMAGE>
