PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of a by-product by causing an alkylene carbonate compound to add the alcoholic hydroxyl groups of a starting substance with ring opening in the presence of a specific catalyst to convert each hydroxyl group into a hydroxy-terminated alkyl carbonate group. CONSTITUTION:An alkylene carbonate compound (a) having a five- to seven- membered ring is added to a starting substance (b) comprising a compound represented by formula I (wherein A is a 20C or lower aliphatic hydrocarbon group which may have an ether bond; R<1> is a 2-8C alkylene chain; and (x) is 0-6) along with 1ppm to 5% catalyst selected from a Brphinsted acid, an onium salt of a Brphinsted acid anion, a strongly acidic cation exchange resin, an alkyl alkali metal, an alkali metal alcoholate, an amine, a tin compound, a titanium compound, and a zinc compound. The reactants are reacted at room temp. to 150 deg.C to cause the compound (a) to be added to the alcoholic hydroxyl groups of the substance (b) with ring opening. Thus, each alcoholic hydroxy group is converted to the corresponding alkyl carbonate group terminated by hydroxy to obtain an aliphatic carbonate represented by formula II (where R<2> is the same as R<1> and (y) is 1-6). |
