The invention relates to a method for monitoring the completeness of a production, passing through at least one production stream, of individually printed products in on-line production on the basis of a printed original which is stored as a data set in a storage medium, for example a memory of an electronic computer. In the method, a predetermined sequence of data of the data set is assigned a desired binary pattern having a statistically significantly varying sequence of ones and zeros; the products printed on the basis of the data set are printed at predetermined identical positions with markings if a one is provided in the desired binary pattern for the product in the data set; at the end of the production stream, an optical detection device is provided which reads out the markings on the printed products and feeds the read-out marking data as a successive actual desired binary pattern to a comparison unit in which the actual binary pattern is compared with desired binary patterns, deviations in the actual binary pattern of the production stream from the desired binary pattern being assessed as a disturbance in the production stream.
