875,027. Couplings between relatively movable conducting parts; neutralizing thermal expansion in electric couplings. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. April 21, 1960 [April 21, 1959], No. 13578/59. Class 38 (1). An overhead electric conductor system comprises three conductors 1 located within a flexible tube 2 having a longitudinal slit 3 and formed of extruded polychloroprene, clamps being secured along the length of the tube. Each clamp consists of an internal member 4 and an external member 5 held together by a screw 6 passing through the tube 2. The internal members 4 are of epoxy resin and have grooves on their inner faces to receive the bull-headed conductor rails 1. Additional grooves 11 increase the creepage path between neighbouring conductors. The external members 5 are provided with clamping means 14, 16 for engaging catenary wires 13 which are given additional support by bridges 17 secured to a fixed support 18. When the system is of considerable length, connectors 21 are used to joint successive lengths and such connectors, one on each side of an internal clamping member 4, may be used to locate the conductors endwise. In a modification, Fig. 2, thermal expansion joints for the conductors each consist of a connector 23 clamped to one conductor end only, the other conductor being free to slide in the connector 23 and having a second connector 25 clamped to it. A looped flexible lead 27 is cast or sweated to the two connectors. Fig. 2 also shows a collector of which a table 28 of insulating material is supported by a spring- loaded trolley arm 29 mounted on a carriage (not shown) which travels along a path parallel to the conductor system. The lower parts of lateral walls 31 formed on the table engage parts of the walls of the tube 2 on each side of the slit 3 and open the tube to the extent required. Lateral guidance for the collector is provided by the deflected parts of the tube wall, by engagement of the tube wall with upwardlyprojecting wall 30 of the collector, and by the walls 32 on the collector which register with the centre conductor. Spring - loaded carbon brushes 33 bear on the lower face of the conductors. Alternatively, the brushes may be of metal and spring-urged or they may be of spring form. An earth or neutral conductor may be provided externally of the flexible tube, Fig. 3 (not shown). Specification 774,558 is referred to. |
