In combined freight traffic, a transport container is conveyed in a transport chain with different transport means from the despatcher to the receiver. In this process the advantages of the transport means from which this transport chain is formed are utilised, the freight capacity of seaships, energy-saving transport on inland waterways, economical transport by rail and the conveyance of the transport container to a precise destination by lorry. The sections on the transport path where the transport container is changed from one transport means to another transport means are time consuming, and therefore costly. Standing times and waiting times increase transport costs. With the invention it is possible to load and unload containers and interchangeable containers without additional conveying systems. The transport containers can therefore be transferred even outside transfer stations and harbour areas. Particularly in the road/rail area of combined freight traffic the invention is intended to relieve long-distance roads. Here, the invention is beneficial to the extent that the crane system is installed on a lorry and is operated by the driver of the vehicle so that no additional personnel costs are incurred for the loading process.
