A microelectrode is provided which has a gold microwire 12 encapsulated in borosilicate glass 14 the microwire and the glass being sealed to one another to isolate the interface from penetration. In a preferred arrangement, an array of microelectrodes 10 is manufactured, the encapsulated microwires being drawn together with the thickness of encapsulation controlling the spacing between microwires. The array of microelectrodes may be incorporated in a sensor including an an ode, cathode and electrolyte, all of which are sheathed in a protective membrane 16 which preferably comprises a polytetra fluoroethylene tube 16 with an internal layer 15 of fluorinated ethylene propylene copolymer. <IMAGE> |
