A retractable writing implement capable of releasing the projected locking of a pen point by an operation in the same direction as an operation to projectedly lock the pen point, wherein an operating member (6) which is moved, by the operation, relatively to an external body (1) is interlocked with a refill (5) having the pen point at the tip thereof, a ball (7c) (engagedly projected part) is formed on the inner side surface of a clip (7) installed on the external body (1), an engagement part (6b) is formed in the operating member (6), the pen point is locked by the engagement of the ball (7c) with the engagement part (6b) in the state of being projected from the tip of the external body (1) and, when the ball (7c) and the engagement part (6b) are engaged with each other or disengaged from each other by the operation, the movement of the ball (7c) relative to the engagement part (6b) is formed by the combination of the movement in the direction of a same plane and the movement in the direction apart from or close to the plane.
