PURPOSE:To obtain a new polysaccharide KF-3 having specified physicochemical properties by culturing a specific strain, and to obtain a flocculant, an absorbent, etc., excellent in biodegradability, safe in the natural environment, and free from secondary pollution by utilizing the polysaccharide. CONSTITUTION:A microorgasnism which belongs to the genus Enterobacter and capable of producing a polysaccharide KF-3 is cultured, and from the culturing product is harvested the polysaccharide having the following physicochemical properties: (1) color reaction; ninhydrin reaction negative, xanthoprotein reaction negative, phenol-sulfuric acid method positive, anthrone-sulfuric acid method positive, carbazole-sulfuric acid reaction positive, and Elson-Morgan reaction negative; (2) color: white; (3) solubility: hardly sol. in distilled water, alkali-sol., and insol. in an org. solvent such as methanol; (4) ultraviolet absorption spectrum: absorbance increases slowly from 350nm and rapidly from 240nm; and (5) infrared absorption spectrum: absorptions at 3550, 2950, 1730, 1650, and 800-1200cm<-1>. |
