Artificial surface with a thickness of the order of 40 to 150 mm, in particular suited for producing racecourse tracks and essentially consisting of a fine particulate material with particle size lying between 0.01 and 2 mm, in which synthetic fibres are dispersed in all directions, which artificial surface is characterised in that it includes, in proportions by weight, approximately 1 to 5% of synthetic fibres, in particular polypropylene fibres having a length of between 4 and 75 mm and a diameter of between 5 and 20 mu m. Method for obtaining an artificial surface, characterised in that, in a prior step, a dispersion of fibres in water is prepared by mechanical agitation at a concentration of the order of 5 to 10 g/l, then the surface to be treated is sprayed with this dispersion in order to distribute the fibres thereon essentially uniformly, the fibres are mixed with sand by conventional mechanical means over a thickness of 40 to 150 mm, and the operation is repeated until the desired mechanical characteristics are obtained.
