The invention relates to a mains starting device for internal combustion engines, which device has a starter (1) which operates with D.C. current and is constructed as a permanent magnet-excited sliding-gear starting motor and starts an internal combustion engine by coupling an axially displaceable pinion (2), the said pinion (2) being moved, by an engagement magnet (6) via an engagement lever (4), into toothed engagement with a crown gear (10) on the flywheel of the internal combustion engine to be started while the starting energy is drawn from an alternating current mains or rotary current mains with the intermediate connection of a transformer (13) and of a rectifier (14). The electric motor (1a) of this starting device, with permanent magnets (8) as exciter for the armature (9), continues to operate as a generator after the current is switched off, and as a result of the current which continues to flow to the engagement magnet (6) for a short time prevents the said engagement magnet (6) from being effective. It is proposed, by virtue of using an additional decoupling rectifier (15a), to keep the generator current in the electric motor (1a) away from the terminal (50) of the engagement magnet (6) after the mains is switched off in order to terminate the starting process. <IMAGE>
