The invention relates to a device for making rubber mixtures (rubber compounds) having an internal mixer with floating weight (1) for the basic mixture and, disposed below this and operating in a batchwise manner, an internal mixer (4) without floating weight to which the basic mixture is fed without intermediate storage. In order to be able rapidly to cool the basic mixture in the internal mixer without floating weight and complete the final mixing process reliably and rapidly, the invention provides for only one part of the active surface (31) of the rotor of the internal mixer without floating weight to be provided with a surface wear protection layer. Preferably this layer is provided only in the region of the effective edges of the rotor projections, whereas the other part of the active surface is free of the aforementioned wear protection layer.
