A mattress for bedridden patients, comprising a rectangular bottom support layer made from foam material, a rectangular top layer of foam material of corresponding size and a cover of flexible material which surrounds the two layers and comprises two parts which can be attached to one another, in such a manner that the two layers are held directly against one another, the bottom layer being provided with at least one recess in which one or more removable filling elements are fitted, while the middle part of the rectangular assembled mattress contains an opening running through the layers and the cover, the wall of the opening being covered with the cover material, so that the mattress is suitable for paralysed paraplegic patients.
