Automatic addressing of monitoring and/or control processing units comprised in a digital information transmission system.

For the monitoring of digital telecommunication transmission devices during operation, said devices contain additional processor units which accept the fault reports and convert them into telemetry signals. Because of the aimed for interrogation of individual processor units, the latter are addressed, one processor unit functioning as master and the other as slave. After the repair or new installation it is desired that the new addressing of all the processor units can be carried out under the control of a slave. For this purpose a processor unit switched as slave transmits an appropriate instruction telegram either in the direction from which it has received call-up instructions or, if said instructions have not been received yet, it initially transmits said instruction telegram in a transmission direction, then waits for a suitable period of time to determine whether a master has been activated for addressing and, if this is not the case, transmits the instructions in the opposite transmission direction.
