Cold production device for transmitting negative calories to a medium to be cooled from the energy supplied by a low voltage self-contained electricity source such as a vehicle battery, for instance a car battery. The device comprises a cold production assembly including one or more Peltier effect cells (9, 10, 32, 33) capable of supporting a maximum voltage (V max), a first exchanger (11, 34) for discharging the calories produced and a second exchanger (1, 35) for transmitting the negative calories produced. In accordance with the invention, each Peltier effect cell (9, 10) is connected in such a way that the voltage (U) across its terminals is in the range of V max/3 to 2 V max/3. Further, said cells (9, 10) are adapted to present an efficiency coefficient (Cef) such that: Cef = Wf/We x Wf/(Wf+We) >/= 1, in which Wf and We are the refrigerating capacity provided by the cell and the electrical power consumption of said cell.
