Metal ions such as Cu<2+> tend to promote multimerisation of stem cell inhibitors (SCIs) such as wild-type and variant macrophage inflammatory promoter-1 alpha (MIP-1 alpha ). High order multimers are unwanted in both in processing and in pharmaceutical formulations. Therefore, in pharmaceutically useful and other formulations of SCIs, monomer formation is promoted by removing metal ions, such as by the use of EDTA or another chelating agent.
