PURPOSE: To assign a buffer base to keep proper balance between the utilizing degree of a buffer memory and the overhead of memory management. CONSTITUTION: A networking device is provided with plural buffers. Each buffer is provided with each size. Plural buffers are classified into the plural sets of the buffers. Each set is provided with the buffer of each different size. The sequenced sequence of buffer sets is decided. One of the sets is a first set in the sequenced sequence. Some buffer is assigned from the first set. The part of a data packet is stored in this assigned buffer. When the size of the packet is larger than the assigned buffer, a next buffer is assigned from another buffer set according to the sequence order of the buffer set. Until the next part of a data packet is stored in the other buffer and the whole data packet is received, this step is repeated.
