The application for patent rights comprises a lathe for machining wheel sets. Floor-mounted wheel lathes have clamping jaws for driving the wheel set. Clamping jaws of this type leave notches in the wheel set. To avoid such notches, friction rollers are used for driving the wheel sets. The use of friction rollers requires force equilibrium during turning. The apparatus according to the invention is characterised in that the lines of action of the top and/or bottom pressure rollers form an angle which is less than 180 degrees. Furthermore, the apparatus according to the invention is characterised in that it is possible to attach friction rollers to wheel lathes which were hitherto equipped with clamping-jaw drives.
