<p>A gasket (25) for use in flanged joints of carbon steel pipes containing hydrofluoric acid, comprises a spiral wound element (26), consisting of MONEL (RTM) strip interleaved with graphite filler, and a radially inner ring (30), consisting of layers (321, 322) of compressible exfoliated graphite disposed in a core of carbon steel having a transverse aperture of the same diameter as the flange bore. Upon transverse direction loading defined for the size and pressure rating of the joint and applied by way of the flanges, the spiral wound element and inner ring compress to a predetermined final thickness, the graphite layers of the inner ring providing in compression a primary seal which excludes the acid from the flange faces and the spiral wound element to prevent corrosion thereof.</p> |
