This invention relates to a process for converting a carbonaceous material to a liquid product using a hydrogen donor solvent. More specifically, this invention relates to a process for hydroconverting a carbonaceous material in a hydroconversion zone (2), wherein a 400 - 1000 DEG F hydroconversion product fraction is further hydrocracked in a hydrocracking zone (8) and a hydrocracked fraction is recycled to the hydroconversion zone (2) as the hydrogen donor solvent after being mixed with carbonaceous material and a catalyst precursor in a mixing zone (1).
