An ignition coil for internal combustion engines is to be designed in such a way that it has only a small variation in the functional values in mass production and has a high energy storage capability. The ignition coil has a ferromagnetic core (11) with a closed jacket core (12) and a centre leg (13) which crosses the latter and is terminated in the longitudinal direction at both ends by end parts (17). These end parts are widened like a pole shoe and partially project into recesses (24) in the jacket core (12), which are shaped in such a way that gaps (18) of constant width form towards the ends of the end parts (17). On account of the end parts (17) projecting into the jacket core (12), a large length of the gaps (18) can be realised and this means that, for a predetermined magnetic reluctance of a gap (18) provided with a shorter length, the width of said gap can be increased. The object described at the beginning can be achieved by this means. This ignition coil is preferably used in internal combustion engines of motor vehicles. <IMAGE>
