Technical problem of the invention = technical task and objective: in screen monitors the on-state of the mains switch is usually indicated by the glowing of a light-emitting diode. These light-emitting diodes are easy to overlook and it is often difficult to read them, with the result that screen monitors often remain switched on accidentally after the termination of their use, under the unconscious assumption that, when the screen is dark because no input signal is present, the device is switched off as well. Solution of the problem or of the technical task: by means of a control circuit the monitor input is monitored for incoming signals. In the absence of a signal for example one colour, for example blue, is switched over all screen elements, that is to say when for example a connected personal computer has been switched off and no longer feeds any signals to the input, the screen area is illuminated with a blue colour. Two advantages are achieved: 1. The user will no longer forget to switch off the screen monitor since the screen does not stay black as long as the monitor is switched on (energy saving, service life of the device). 2. The light-emitting diode display can be dispensed with. Applications: audiovisual technology, computer technology.
