PURPOSE:To provide an ATM communication equipment and a fault detection informing device in which state transition can be correctly performed when the fault of a transmission line occurs. CONSTITUTION:The same fault detection processing is performed both in the case of detecting the faulty state of a VP when the fault of the transmission line of its own device occurs, and in the case of detecting the faulty state of the VP by receiving a VP-AIS cell generated by the other device. By taking the chance of a channel 110 that a terminating part 101 generates a fault informing cell generating part 102 generates a first fault informing cell 108, and inserts it into the main signal stream on a reception side. A circuit 105 provided at the downstream of the main signal stream in the same way copys or extracts the first fault informing cell 108 and the first fault informing cell 108 received from an outside, and a detecting part 103 discriminates the faulty state, generates a second fault informing cell 109 according to the discriminated result, and inserts it into the main signal cell stream of a transmission side.
