PURPOSE: To prevent new improved technology for detecting the deterioration of development in a large solid area. CONSTITUTION: In a device provided with an image formation surface 10, a projector 32 for projecting an image to the surface 10 and a developer capable of sticking toner to the image projected to the surface 10 and transferring the image to copying paper and constituted so that the developer responds to a prescribed set value including a developer bias and the potential of the surface 10, the automatic developer controlling method for calibrating the set value of the developer periodically senses toner mass on a 1st developing patch in image space on the surface 10 by a densitometer 54, controls the developer bias and the potential of the surface 10 in response to the perioclical sensing of the toner mass, and at the time of prescribed device operation, similarly senses toner mass on a 2nd developing patch occupying a part of the image space on the surface 10 by the densitometer 54 and periodically senses the toner mass on the 1st developing patch in the image space on the surface 10 in response to the sensing of the device operation. |
