A method for operating twisting spindles and an apparatus for carrying out the method. In the method, the run of the thread (F2) through the thread balloon delimited by a balloon limiter (3) is periodically disturbed in such a way that transverse waves form within the thread balloon over the thread length, such that the thread balloon touches the inner face of the balloon limiter at individual points only, so that, for each thread element of the thread running through the thread balloon, there is a time of non-contact after a time of contact with the balloon limiter. To generate the transverse waves, the thread is guided through an undulator ring (6) which can be set in vibrations and which is arranged in such a way that the rotating thread (F2) touches it on the inside. An oscillating movement of predetermined frequency, direction of vibration and amplitude is imparted to the undulator ring (6). <IMAGE>
