PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting tool capable of suppressing the wear and the like of the cutting tool and achieving the extension of a tool life while ensuring a cutting performance.SOLUTION: A cutting tool (T) of the present invention characteristically has a retention groove (3) which is provided at least in a part of a contact region of a rake surface (1) that may come in contact with chips (d) of a to-be-cut material (W) generated by cutting the to-be-cut material (W) by a cutting edge (11) provided on a tip of the cutting tool (T) and which suppresses the chips from flowing. When a difficult-to-cut material is subjected to cutting processing, part of the chips are captured in the retention groove and form a retention part. This retention part acts as a heat insulating layer and suppresses heat input to the cutting tool from the chips the temperature of which has risen during cutting, so that the temperature of the cutting tool does not become excessively high and wear is suppressed.
