Device for locking an axially mobile element (4) in the bed of a machine tool (3) by radial clamping, the elements being such as tool holders, cutter holders, taps, used mainly on autolathes and automatic lathes. The expanding key according to the invention allows locking via a substantial bearing surface, therefore one with low specific pressure, preventing any deformation and guaranteeing that, after clamping, the position of the element is strictly identical to that set before locking. (Accuracy to within a micron). The time saving when setting-up a machine is substantial. <IMAGE>
