The device comprises a central apparatus (15) which is connected, for the purpose of data exchange, to a spatially offset data source (23) which is not connected electrically to the environment. In order to establish the connection, use is made of a handset (20) and a base set (19) of a cordless telephone as well as of the public telecommunication network (11), symbolized by a central station (13) and the connecting lines (16, 18). In order to establish a connection, the number of the central apparatus (15) is dialled from the handset (20) and a radio link (21) of limited range is put into operation. The handset (20) is furthermore inserted into a mechanical guidance means (27) and an optical interface (25) between the data source (23) and the handset (20) is thereby activated, in each case half of the elements of the interface being arranged in the data source (23) and half in the handset (20). <IMAGE>
