PURPOSE:To provide the liquid crystal display element capable of realizing a wide and uniform visual angle characteristic without generating inconvenient coloration separate from the color intrinsically desired to be expressed on images. CONSTITUTION:The directions where liquid crystal molecules rise at the time of voltage application are randomized by forming the surfaces of oriented films 9, 15 on substrates in such a manner that the bearings of the major axes of the liquid crystal molecules of a liquid crystal layer 19 are not unified while the liquid crystal molecules maintain a nearly horizontal posture with the substrate surfaces at the time of voltage application. Consequently, T-V characteristics are nearly the same in any bearings and the wide and uniform visual angle characteristic is realized. The addition of chiral materials to the liquid crystal layer 19 is omitted and the twist arrangement is effected by the twisting capacity of the liquid crystal molecules themselves, by which the coloration of the displayed images is lessened and the display quality is improved. In addition, the threshold voltage of the liquid crystal layer 19 degrades and, therefore, the high-contrast display is obtd. in spite of the low applied voltage. |
