An apparatus is described for separating off fluid ash from the exhaust gas arising in the combustion of carbon-containing fuels. The exhaust gas to be purified has a temperature of 1200 to 1800 DEG C, a pressure of 1 to 100 bar and an ash content of 0.1 to 60 g/m<3> (S.T.P.). The apparatus comprises a cyclone (1) which contains a gas inlet (2) for the tangential feed of the exhaust gas (3) and a gas outlet (7) for the removal of the purified gas (8) and which cyclone contains a packed bed (4) which makes up 20 to 80% of the cyclone volume, is composed of ceramic solid bodies and through which exhaust gas (3) flows in the direction of the cyclone wall and from top to bottom. <IMAGE>
