An amorphous aluminosilicate having the formula:… xM2/nO.Al2O3.ySiO2… (wherein M is selected from the group consisting of sodium, potassium, lithium, calcium, magnesium, cobalt (II), iron (II), nickel (II), aluminum, ammonium, silver, copper, zinc, mercury, tin, lead, bismuth, cadmium and chromium; n is the valence of M; x is a number between 0.6 and 1.8 inclusive; and y is a number between 1.3 and 50 inclusive), and an amorphous aluminosilicate having an antibacterial and/or bactericidal action are disclosed.
