Hafnium stannate phosphor composition and X-ray intensifying screen.

Phosphor compsn. comprises oxygen and elements of formula: ((Hf1-zZrz)1+xSn1-x)1-yTi2y (I) (where x =- 0.4-0.95, 2y = 0-0.5, z = 0-0.5). The phosphor comprises an orthorhombic structure. An x-ray intensifying screen is also claimed. X-ray intensifying screen comprises: a support; a layer comprising an organic binder that is transparent to x-radiation, and a phosphor which is capable of absorbing x-radiation and emitting longer wavelength electromagnetic radiation. The phosphor pref. consists of a substantially mono-phasic orthorhombic crystal structure; (where x = -0.2 to 0.8, 2y = 0.0001-0.2, z = 0-0.1); the ratio of Hf/Zr:Sn is 7:3.
