A rack and pinion steering system, in particular for motor vehicles, is provided with a steering rack (2) arranged in a steering gear housing (1) in an axially displaceable fashion, and with a pressure element (37) which surrounds the back of the steering rack (2) in a yoke-like fashion. Devices are provided which increase the coefficient of friction of the steering rack, or make it more difficult to move, as a result of which devices the steering resistance varies as a function of the steering lock, specifically in such a way that the steering resistance is higher in the centre position of the steering rack (2). <IMAGE>
