PURPOSE:To provide a beta-lactam compound useful as an intermediate for carbapenem compounds used as antibiotics. CONSTITUTION:The compound is expressed by formula I (each of R1, R2 R<0>3 is H, a lower alkyl; R<11>4 is a carboxyl or thiocarboxyl-protecting group; X is H, protected OH; Y is O, S; COZ' is an active carboxylate ester or active carboxylic acid anhydride group, protected thiolcarboxyl, substituted aryloxycarbonyl, heteroaryloxycarbonyl), e.g. (3S, 4S)-3-[(1R)-1-t- butyldimethylsilyloxyethyl]-4-[(1R)-1-phenylthiocarbonylethyl]-1-p- nitrobenzyloxycarbonylethyl-2-azetidinone. A carbapenem compound of formula VII (R0 is an organic group) can be obtained from the compound of formula I as a starting raw material through the reaction formula. |
