APPARATUS FOR SEPARATING INTERMIXED MATERIALS OF DIFFERENT SPECIFIC GRAVITY

A centrifugal separator comprises a bowl (10) into which the materials to be separated are fed at a position adjacent a first feed end (12) of the bowl so that the materials flow over a peripheral wall (11) of the bowl to a second discharge end (13) of the bowl. On the inside surface of the bowl is provided a plurality of guide channels (44) which direct the material from the feed end (12) toward the discharge end (13). The channels (44) are shaped so as to increase in depth toward the discharge end thus assisting it in separating the heavier materials toward the wall. Adjacent the discharge end (13) is provided in each channel a V-shaped slot (23) commencing in a position spaced from the discharge end and extending to and through the discharge end while gradually increasing in width. Outside of the slots is provided an annular cutting knife (63) which separates material discharging at the base of the slot from material discharging from the slot adjacent the discharge end of the bowl and including materials discharging from over the open mouth of the bowl. The separator thus acts continuously to generate heavy concentrate which is operated from the lighter gangue.
