A method of substantially inhibiting normal stem cell proliferation in a mammal including the administration of a normal stem cell proliferation-inhibiting effective amount of T beta 4 to the mammal. Also, a method of decreasing the toxicity of a toxic therapeutic composition in a mammal including the administration of a normal stem cell proliferation-inhibiting effective amount of T beta 4 to the mammal.
