The present invention relates to a process for the production of metal foils of high purity, in particular silicon foils. The metal foils are here treated in the crystallising state with reactive gases. Preferably, this purification process is carried out in the region between the molten and solid phases with oxygen, steam, hydrogen or mixtures of oxygen and steam or hydrogen and steam and also halogen-containing gases. The foils are used as starting material for solar cells.
